A Vintage Mid-Century Minangkabau Headdress from West Sumatra.
The headdress (Suntiang) is handmade in one of West Sumatras' villages, made of lightweight foil sheet and beads. The small sprung decorative flowers and love birds were designed to shimmer on the move, typically worn by a bride for the entire ceremony and during the evening events, they can weigh over 3 kilos and older pieces were much heavier by design. The Minangkabau people (meaning: victorious water-buffalo) are matrilineal people and such wedding costumes are passed down from mother to daughter.
Condition is commenserable to age, with some beads and pressed metal decoration and springs missing/broken, fading of colour. Overall this is a highly decorative and desireable piece. Stand is included.
Width of Headdress: 50cm Height of headress: 40cm (60cm including stand) approximately 10cm in depth.
Because of the fragility of this piece; we would prefer collection only but please get in touch to discuss options.
